Correctness of "Both are equally terrifying" [closed]

A quote attributed to Arthur C. Clarke says "Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying."

Is it grammatically correct? I think it should say "The two are equally terrifying" or "Both are terrifying, equally so".

Solution 1:

"Both" is a pronoun that stands for "the two possibilities", so it is correct. This form of reference to two entities by means of "both" is very common.
