How to get a live speedmeter on the top bar?
Solution 1:
There is an app called indicator-multiload that displays CPU, memory, swap, load, etc. and also includes net speed.
First, run the following commands to install the app:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install indicator-multiload gnome-tweaks gnome-shell-extensions gnome-shell-extension-appindicator
Next, search your installed apps for "indicator" or "indicator multiload". Launch the app. It will show in the top bar. It usually shows a graph without numbers by default. If it doesn't show on the top bar at this time, you may need to use the Gnome tweak app to enable the appindicator extension.
To display numbers, hover over the graph and then scroll up/down using the mouse wheel or touchpad. Scroll all the way up to disable number display. From this position, scroll down three clicks of the mouse wheel to display net speed.
Then, right-click on the graph and select "Preferences". Under "Monitored Resources", you can enable or disable graphs. If you only want to show net speed, untick all the other boxes.
You can also set the graph colors, update speed, etc.
Alternatively, you can install the netspeed Gnome Shell extension.
You will need to install the following packages:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install chrome-gnome-shell gnome-tweaks gnome-shell-extensions
Then, install this Google Chrome extension or this Firefox extension. Close or restart Google Chrome or Firefox before you proceed.
Next, visit the netspeed Gnome Shell Extension page to install the extension from the website.
Use the Gnome Tweak application to enable this extension after it is installed.
