No black ink printing for MFC 490CW Brother printer?

I have a Brother model MFC 490CW color printer than has three color ink and one black ink cartridge.

I've replaced the black ink cartridge, but I still get no black ink being printed, the three color inks are printing correctly. What could be going wrong and how might I fix this? The printer had been idle for about nine months, could there be some kind of clogging? The printer's clean utility did not help.

I cleared the ink jets on a brother MFC-490CW on the first try.

  1. I had no black after 3 or 4 Power_P ALL cycles.
  2. I took the alcohol injection route.
  3. I removed all 4 ink cartridges.
  4. Using a flashlight,I found the inlet tube for the black ink.
  5. Using the thin rubber tube from an antifreeze tester which fit snugly over the black ink inlet tube,I injected about 1/4-1/2 oz. of Everclear(90% ethyl alcohol) into the tube under pressure.
  6. replaced ink cartridges.
  7. I ran the Power_P cycle once more.
  8. Black functioned 99% on first test page and 100% on second.

I know this is an old post but I’m chiming in on it as I had this issue with a MFC-J435W and this was one of the first pages Google returned. It was fixed over the phone using what Brother calls the Power Purge and Exhaust Purg. The steps for this process, on the MFC-J435W, are below.

Warranty or not, I would call Brother to get the exact steps for your printer.

  1. Perform an Exhaust Purge of the affected color(s).

NOTE: An Exhaust purge does not use any ink, so cleaning ALL is recommended.

  1. If the message “INK LOW” or “REPLACE INK -CANNOT PRINT” is displayed, you will need to replace the color ink cartridge(s) displayed in the message. The exhaust purge cannot be completed until the ink cartridge has been replaced

    • If you have a replacement cartridge(s), install the cartridge and continue to STEP 2a.

    • If you do not have a replacement cartridge(s), please come back to this solution and start at this point once you have the required replacement cartridge(s).

    • Press MENU, BLACK START, 0. The LCD will display MAINTENANCE.

    • Press 7, 6. The LCD will display CLEANING ALL.

    • Press and hold the # (pound/number sign) key and press 2. The display will show EXAUST_R ALL

    • Press the BLACK START key. The machine will begin a cleaning cycle.

    • After the cleaning cycle the display will go back to the main screen.

  2. Perform a Power Purge of the affected color(s).

    • If the message “INK LOW” or “REPLACE INK -CANNOT PRINT” is displayed, you will need to replace the color ink cartridge(s) displayed in the message. The power purge cannot be completed until the ink cartridge has been replaced

    • If you have a replacement cartridge(s), please install the cartridge and continue to STEP 3a.

    • If you do not have a replacement cartridge(s), then when you do acquire it please come back to this solution and start at this point.

    • Press the STOP/EXIT key.

    • Press MENU, BLACK START, 0. The LCD will display MAINTENANCE.
    • Press 7, 6, 3. The LCD will display POWER__P ALL.
    • Press the LEFT ARROW key at the bottom left of the LCD to display the arrows on the top row.

    • If the affected color is Black, press the RIGHT ARROW in the top right corner of the LCD until “POWER__P Black” is displayed.

    • If one or more of the 3 colors (Yellow, Cyan or Magenta) are affected, press the RIGHT ARROW in the top right corner of the LCD to select either “POWER__P Magenta” or “POWER__P Cyan” or “POWER__P Yellow”.

    • If Black and any color (Yellow, Cyan or Magenta) are affected press the RIGHT ARROW in the top right corner of the LCD until “POWER__P ALL” is displayed.

    • Press BLACK START. The machine will begin a cleaning cycle.

    • Once the cleaning cycle has completed print another PQCS:

    • Press the 4 color columns on the touchscreen.

    • Select Test Print on the LCD
    • Select Print Quality on the LCD.
    • Press COLOR START. The machine will generate the Print Quality Check Sheet.
    • Compare this PQCS with the first PQCS printed.

    • If all the lines are clear and visible, the issue is resolved. Press STOP/EXIT to return to the standby display and continue to STEP 4.

    • If there is improvement but some of the dotted lines are still missing, press STOP/EXIT and return to STEP 3.

    • If two power purges have been performed and some of the dotted lines are still missing, press STOP/EXIT and continue to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.
