Can't open .wmv video files [duplicate]

plugins 12.04 vlc syslinux 
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted*

Tried everything including installing ubuntu-restricted-extras, medibuntu w32codecs, MPlayer etc. Finally SMPlayer did the trick.
