Physiognomy is a practice of assessing a person's character or personality from their outer appearance—especially the face. Although it fell out of favor as science as the 20th century approached, many 19th century authors, including Dickens, Hardy and the Bronte sisters, used physiognomy to describe their characters. Arthur Conan Doyle (22 May 1859– 7 July 1930) wrote at the tail end of physiognomy’s popularity, but it meshed well with Sherlock’s ability to draw conclusions from outward appearances.
