Dell Color Laser 1320c with Mac OS 10.15 Catalina: Filter failed

After upgrading to Mac OS 10.15 Catalina, trying to print with a Dell Color Laser 1320c leads to the error message: Filter failed (German: Filter fehlgeschlagen).

This fixes the "Filter failed" (German: "Filter fehlgeschlagen") error with Dell Color Laser 1320c printers under Mac OS 10.15 Catalina by leveraging the Fuji Xerox C525A printer driver which is similar to the native Dell driver.

  1. User steveham modified the original driver so it could install on all macOS versions greater than 10.7. Download the modified driver here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/aotekhnsj7ox7e4/Fuji%20Xerox%20Print%20Plug-in%20Installer%20Modified.pkg?dl=0

  2. Open the .dmg file, then open the .pkg file (via right click > open)

  3. Finish the setup guide

  4. Click on the Apple Menu in the upper left-hand corner of your screen and select System Preferences... click on Printers & Scanners.

  5. Unlock the window using the lock icon in the lower left corner if necessary

  6. Click on the + sign to add a printer

  7. Connect your Dell via USB and turn it on

  8. It should soon appear in the list. Select it.

  9. Change the driver enter image description here enter image description here enter image description here

  10. Finish the setup. In order to be able to print using the paper try, please apply the following setting: "500 sheet feeder"

  1. When you print something for the first time, you'll need to set the correct paper source. -Click the "Show Details" button on the print dialog screen. -In the "layout" pulldown select "Full Zerox Features" --Select "Paper source: Tray 1 (500 sheets)" :

  1. After that, you can save the current settings as a reusable preset. (You might need to Google how to do that). Once you have a preset made, select it and press the Print button while holding down Alt (Option) to automatically select this preset every time you print using the system dialog.

I can confirm the solution given by alsdkjasdlkja works. I only have 1 addition. I first tried to change the driver of my already installed Dell Color Laser 1320c instead of removing it and reinstalling it. This didn't work. I couldn't select a paper tray when trying to print something.

When I deleted the old printer and reinstalled it with the FX driver, everything worked just fine.
