According to this definition a root is a morpheme that underlies an inflectional or derivational paradigm

And since a morpheme is: any of the minimal grammatical units of a language, each constituting a word or meaningful part of a word, that cannot be divided into smaller independent grammatical parts
then a root would not contain another word or affix
