Windows Installer Service could not be accessed (even though it's running)
These are the recommended steps to take to solve this issue.
- Log on to your computer as an administrator.
- Click
Start
, and then clickRun
. - In the Open box, type
cmd
, and then clickOK
. - At the command prompt,
typemsiexec.exe /unregister
, and then press Enter. - Type
msiexec /regserver
, and then press Enter. - Verify that the
SYSTEM
account has full control access permissions to theHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
hive in the Windows registry. In some cases, you may also have to add Administrator accounts.- Click
Start
, clickRun
, typeregedit
in the Open box, and then clickOK
. - Click the following registry hive:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
- On the
Edit menu
, clickPermissions
. - If
SYSTEM
is not listed in the Group or user names list, clickAdd
, make sure that the local computer name appears in theFrom this location
box, typeSystem
in theEnter the object names to select
box, clickCheck Names
, and then clickOK
. - Click
SYSTEM
in theGroup or user names
list, and then select theFull Control
check box underAllow
in thePermissions for SYSTEM
box. - Click
Apply
, clickOK
, and then quit the Registry Editor.
- Click
- Restart the computer.
If the problem is not resolved, repair Windows XP.
