How heavy on resources is Cinnamon desktop environment?

I have a 1GB RAM PC running Lubuntu. In Xubuntu is still ok, but in KDE and Unity it is not. (The condition of my PC appears clearly in this answer).

Compared to these DE-s, where stands Cinnamon? I am in the mood to try it but I thought maybe to ask first :)

I haven't found anyone who has done a direct Cinnamon vs anything else resource usage study.

Its arguable that Phoronix has done the closest to this looking at the performance comparison between gnome-shell (Mutter) & unity (compiz) using both NVIDIA and ATI graphics. They have also looked at battery usage between Gnome, KDE, LXDE and XFCE.

Since Cinnamon's Muffin is a fork of Mutter - you should perhaps assume the performance and resource usage will be similar or the same i.e. you could argue there is a direct read-across for the Gnome results to Cinnamon.

My reading of the results - and making the assumption that better performance is equivalent to less resource usage for the same work - is that gnome-shell and unity were equally resource hungry. Thus expect Cinnamon and Unity to be similar.

Results varied depending on the actual graphics card - when using NVIDIA drivers, these were equally resource hungry, whereas gnome-shell using ATI was more resource hungry than Unity.

Thus - you should expect Cinnamon to have the same resource profile as Gnome-Shell.

The study also revealed KWin trumped both Mutter and Compiz - LXDE and XFCE trumped these all.

Usual caveats should apply when trying to interpret Phoronix results & methodologies - arguments should be directed to the Phoronix forums!

Solution 2:

In theory, nothing should slow down. The performance should be somewhere along the lines of unity's performance, perhaps even a little better.

In practice, on the other hand, the remains of Unity and thus remaining GTK/GNOME-based software might cause a drop in performance, compared to a bare cinnamon install/Mint.

That said, there is no real benchmark for performance of DEs, so ... we can't really give actual stats - and your best bet is to just try it out. DEs act very differently sometimes.

Solution 3:

I will post considering IDLE conditions in 64 bit system.

Starting from system requirements , they actually Require the same as can be seen here for Ubuntu

The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu 12.04 (32-bit) is 384 MB and (64-bit) 512 MB of memory for Ubuntu

And for Cinnamon

x86 processor (Linux Mint 64-bit requires a 64-bit processor. Linux Mint 32-bit works on both 32-bit and 64-bit processors).
512 MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
5 GB of disk space
Graphics card capable of 800×600 resolution
CD/DVD drive or USB port

Memory consumed by Compiz (Unity's Main ingredient) it takes upto 82~86 MB of RAM

Similarly for Cinnamon (w/o Desktop Effects), takes about the same amount as 82~86 MB RAM

And for Unity it takes about 550~600 MB , the reason for that is i have Lots of Lenses installed hogging up-to ~15 MB RAM for each including Indicators. So that gets counted in extra usage.

With Desktop effects enabled in Cinnamon , it will take the same amount( 550~600 MB) or more . Well its only Traditional Desktop compared to Unity's Concept.

My Usage derived result says, there is exceptionally No Performance difference between them apart from Different Desktop Experience depending on Compiz and Cinnamon.

You should definitely give it a try to judge it personally.

Solution 4:

No, using Cinnamon should not slow down your computer in any way. So feel free to use Unity or Cinnamon or GNOME.
