How to update windows 10 installed on a flash drive?

Solution 1:

Although unsupported, the post Windows To Go (Windows 10) Upgrade to anniversary update offers a solution.

I haven't tested this method so cannot vouch for it, but here it is:

  • Download the Windows ISO
  • Run regedit
  • Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
  • Change the value PortableOperatingSystem from 1 to 0
  • Reboot
  • Open the ISO in Explorer and run setup.exe.
