Windows 7 autorun enabled... yet disabled?

The checkbox "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" is checked.

Yet, at some point in time, my computer has stopped giving me AutoPlay prompts.

I can't really elaborate beyond this because that's basically all there is to observe.

Does anyone know of a solution?

EDIT 19/03/2010: I have attempted to disable and renable AutoPlay a few times to no avail, in case you're going to suggest it. All options are on "Ask me every time".

Solution 1:

The Windows AutoPlay system is quite complex and its behavior depends on a lot of registry settings.

Unfortunately, the AutoPlay Control Panel applet in Windows 7 doesn’t allow you to change system-wide settings. So it’s possible that ”Use AutoPlay for all media and devices” is checked, but AutoPlay is still disabled.

To enable AutoPlay use either of the following methods:

Using Group Policy Editor

Open Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), navigate to Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / AutoPlay Policies and change the Turn off AutoPlay policy to Disabled.

After that you can reset it to Not Configured, which is the default state.

Using Regedit
Unfortunately Group Policy Editor isn’t available on Windows Home editions, as an alternative you can use regedit.

Open regedit and locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

change (or if it doesn't exist create a new DWORD) NoDriveTypeAutorun to 0x91
